この数日間、珍しく「通訳」の仕事をしてきました。昔はメディア用の翻訳、通訳をしていましたが、今は制作全般をしているため、仕事の打診をされた時は少し考えてしまいましたが、今までに仕事をしたことのある媒体スタッフが日本法人で新たな企画を立ち上げるためのトレーニングが内容で、技術的な話よりも制作全般なこともあり引き受けました。
結果、とてもやりやすかったです。やはり自分に知識がある分野は言外に含まれることもよく理解できますし、アメリカ側と日本側に、とても分かりやすかったと感謝してもらいましたが、それはひとえに、わたしの知っている業界だから、ということが大きいです。それに、通訳の質というのは、実はしゃべっている人の資質によっても変わってきます。自分たちにはわかっていることで、それを前提にして話すと通訳には情報が少なすぎるということになります。簡単な例で言えば、同僚の苗字だけを言っても男性か女性かがわからない、ということです。今回のクライアントは、その意味では、プロジェクトに関わっていないわたしにも皆さんきっちりと説明をする人たちだったので、スムーズだったのはそのおかげでもあります。
翻訳通訳は頭脳の使いどころが制作とは違うと思っているのでそれなりの疲労はありましたが、喜んでもらえると嬉しい。これはどんなサービスを提供しても言えることですね。
I had a few days of interpretation job, which I don't do it anymore since I take care of overall production now. But since I had worked with some people from the company based in the States and the subject would be more like about overall productions rather than technical stuff, so I decided to take it.
It turned out to be quite good and I was comfortable working for them. They thanked me saying it was perfect but I think that's because I know the industry and what they were talking about. Also, the quality of interpretation
depends on how speakers are. For example, in Japanese, we don't have to specify the gender when we refer to someone. So if you only say your colleague's sir name, which is common to be mentioned, you actually have no idea if that's a he or she. The clients were willing to give me extra information since I wasn't in the project they were talking about and that helped me a lot too.
I was of course tired after work since interpretation requires a different part of brain from regular production, but they were pleased and I was pleased to see them pleased. I guess that's what it means when you provide any kind of services.
