明日からロケで今日は移動日です。今回は九州。一人で乗る飛行機。子どもと一緒の時は、騒がずにいられるか、お菓子やおもちゃを用意して、タイミングを見計らって渡すことに集中し、ゆっくりと時間を過ごすこともないけれど、一人でいると本当にフルで時間を使えるその自由さに驚きます。昔は自分も手にしていたものですけど。
さて、今回は、通常のテレビ番組ではなく、企業のイベントを記録するためのビデオクルーとの仕事。去年もお仕事をし、今年もぜひ、と言われ、正直いまとても忙しいのですが引き受けてしまいました。わたしのように、一人で働くフリーランスは、あまり仕事に対してのフィードバックをもらうことがないので、同じところからお仕事をもらうというのは評価してくれたと解釈でき、嬉しいもの。去年とてもいい仕事をしてくれたので今年もぜひ、と言われると、少々無理しても仕事したい！と思いますね。
今回はシンガポールの企業です。ここ数年、シンガポール企業とのお付き合いが増えてきました。とともに、アジアの中での日本の存在感が薄れていくのも肌身に感じます。リーマンショック後に欧米メディアがどんどん日本から支局を撤退させたのには、日本からのニュースバリューが以前ほどではないことにつきると思います。日本の政治なんて、世界からすると茶番もいいところでしょう。真実は何も言わないし、一部のおじさんたちが口裏を合わせ、物事が公の場で決まる前に決まっているような国の何を報道するのか、と思います。
もう一つの理由としては、日本での英語が通じない状況。何をするにも一部の人のみしか英語ができないので、年々経営が厳しさを増す欧米資本のメディアはアジア支局を一本化。それを機に、香港やシンガポールにアジア支局を置くことにしました。英語が日常的に通じるので。そういう環境で仕事をしていると、世界はどんどん狭くなり、物理的な距離は技術の進歩とともに、以前と比べて仕事をする上で問題なくなってきていることを感じます。日本にはすばらしい職人技もサービス精神もあるけれど、それだけを武器に日本語だけで仕事をやっていくのは今後ますます難しくなるのだろうと感じます。

I have filming from tomorrow and today I was traveling all the way to Kyushu. Flying without the kids! When I fly with them, I prepare treats and toys in order to make them reasonably quiet and see when is a right timing to provide them those things so I’m quite tired, but flying alone gives me so much free time and freedom, which surprises me. I used to have it, though.
I work for corporate filming this time, not for TV. There is an even one corporate holds and there is a film crew filming it. I worked with them last year and was asked to join this year. I actually had already two projects coming up and was busy but I couldn’t say no. Freelancers like me should be so honored to have such an evaluation, don’t we? If your performance was acknowledged, don’t you try to work for them again even when you are already busy?
I’m working for a Singapore-based company this time. I have had some business with Singapore-based entities for the past years. At the same time, I also feel the impact of Japan has been fading away in the Asian countries. After the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers, Western media started to pull out from Japan by closing down their bureaus in Tokyo because news from Japan wasn’t as important as it used to be. What we have in the Japanese politics is such a farce. They don’t tell the truth. Only some selected old men talk before public discussions. Who would want to report the news from such a country?
Another reason why they withdrew from Japan was because it’s very difficult to communicate in English. Only handful people in an organization are able to communicate in English and as Western media needed to choose to run a fewer number of bureaus in Asia, they decided to leave their Hong Kong or Singapore Bureau. They would have no problem communicating in English with pretty much everyone. Working with foreign companies all the time, I see how small the world has become as the technology developed and a physical distance isn’t such a big deal any more when you have business. We sure have great craftsmanships or hospitality, but if that’s the only advantage of business we can provide, it’ll be harder and harder to acquire customers from different parts of the planet.
