今度、ある専門家に自分の希望を伝える機会があります。相手はある業種を専門にしているので、わたしがそのことについて理解している程度はその人よりも低いです。でも、わたしがどうしたいかが一番大切なので、アドバイスをもらいながらもその上でどうしたいかを伝えることがどこまでできるか。
これって、おそらくどの仕事でも当てはまることでしょうね。わたしも、翻訳者時代、意訳でこういう風に言えますかと訊かれたことが何度もありました。特にテレビ用の翻訳をしていたので、「意訳」という範囲内で、自分の持っていきたい方向へ話を持っていこうとする場合がありましたね。
その時は、日本語と英語を理解する立場から、ここまでなら意訳の範疇だと言えるけどこれは言い過ぎになります、というような話をしていました。
どの分野でも、結局はそこでのコミュニケーションで互いの理解度をなるべく近いところに持っていくというのが大事だなと思ったのでした。
I have an opportunity to tell what I want to do about something technical. The person is in the field and I don't have the same understanding in it. But I feel what I want matters most so I'd like to get advice and think about what I will want to do.
I think this applies to any professions. When I worked for Japanese TV working as a translator, some directors hoping to make a story to one direction would ask me if it'd be fine to translate a particular way within the range of "free translation." So as a person who understands both languages, I'd tell them something like A would be fine but B would be too much.
That makes me think it's most important to communicate with each other to have each one's understanding as close as possible.
