今日は小石川植物園に行ってきました。桜は半分ほど散っていましたが、東大の研究用の場所とあり、さまざまな桜の種類があり楽しみました。
東京ではなかなか緑が見られないのは確かですが、人工的にでも緑豊かな場所は探せばありますね。小石川植物園然り、新宿御苑然り。もうちょっと頻繁に行ってもいいな。
散りゆく桜を堪能したあとは、近所のカフェでお茶を。そのカフェからも通りの桜が見えて、本当にこの季節は美しいと思うのでした。今池澤夏樹さんの『美しい列島』を読んでいますが、ソメイヨシノは人為的にしか生えないというくだりを読み、確かにそうだったなと思い出しました。美しさを求めて作られた種類、自らは繁殖できず、挿し木、接木を必要とするんですよね。一斉に咲き、一斉に散るのも種の保存という観点からはずれているのだそう。自分の種を残すために、生物は時間をずらそうとするのにソメイヨシノはそうではない、と。面白いことを学びました。
I went to Koishikawa Botanical Garden today. Although the sakura only had half flowers left since the peak is over, they had many different kinds of cherry trees since it's a research institute for University of Tokyo.
It's true that we don't have much green in Tokyo but if you look for it, you can find artificial green spots like the garden or Shinjuku Gyoen. I should go to these parks more often.
After enjoying to see the cherry blossoms, I had tea at the cafe in the hood. I saw more trees on the street through the windows, just amazed to think how beautiful this season is. I am reading the book Utsukushi Retto (Beautiful Islands) written by Natsuki Ikezawa mentioning somei-yoshino cherry blossoms. They require humans to propagate them by cutting and grafting. They were a cultivar for the purpose of beauty, and they do not propagate on their own. It's also off track from the spices preservation point of view that they bloom and fall at once because naturally living things try to have time differences to breed or propagate to preserve, but the somei-yoshino cultivar doesn't. Interesting to learn.
