もう、10年以上前の出来事を、今朝急に思い出しました。
その日は、日本のコマーシャル撮影の通訳仕事がありました。ハリウッド俳優が出演するので、彼の通訳として雇われたのです。現場には、他にもう２人、通訳さんがいました。今朝思い出したのはそのうちの１人の方のこと。彼女は日本人俳優さんの周りにいて、念のために通訳が必要な時に訳すという役回りでした。
さて、現場は基本的に常に一期一会、スタッフも違えばやり方も違う。その場にいる人の英語力も違うので、神経を張り巡らせどのような仕事を期待されているかを読み解く作業を自然にしていたと思います。なので周りを見回し必要であればすぐにどこにでも駆け付けられる気を配っていたのですが、もう一人の通訳さんに「どうしてそんな怖い顔をしてるんですかあ？」と笑いながら言われたことを、ついさっき、思い出しました。
それを言われた私は正直びっくりしました。怖い顔をしていたつもりはなく、通訳が必要になればすぐに駆けつけようとそちらに意識を向けていただけなので。そういえば、その時彼女はずっともう１人の通訳さんと雑談をしていたのだと思います。そしてその輪に入らない私を変な人と思ったのかな、と今になって思います。「え、仕事なので」と答えた気がします。
現場は楽しい方がもちろんいいのですが、レギュラーでお互いのことをわかっていて余裕のある仕事ならともかく、製作側から依頼されている通訳者が初めての現場で雑談をしまくるのは私のスタイルではないですね。CMを作る企業の人もその場にいますしね。プロフェッショナルとはなんなのか、今朝も改めて考えてしまいました。
I suddenly remembered this morning about something happened over 10 years ago.
I had an interpretation job that day for Japanese TV commercial with a Hollywood star. I was hired to interpret for him on site. There were two other interpreters there and I remembered one of them this morning. She was allocated to work for a Japanese actress in case if there's English communication.
Every time, each site has different staff and a way to work is different. The English understanding ability there is also different so I'd always try to see what I was required to do and be ready to run to anyone who needs help. Basically I was busy paying attention to everyone and looking around without chatting. The interpreter then asked why I was working so seriously as she was laughing.
I was genuinely surprised. I didn't mean to have a scary face. I just wanted to be ready for anyone. Now looking back, she was having a chit-chat with the other interpreter and I was not joining them. That's why she said such a thing? I think I just said because I was working.
It's always good to have a nice filming site, but it's also not my style of working to chat all the time when I am hired to interpret by a production company especially when you have never worked with the staff. The original client (company making that commercial) is there too. Just a little memory making me wonder what being professional is.
